On death row in Ohio they don't do cake and birtday decorations. The American, who celebrated his 33th birtday last Friday did this alone in his cell. A welcome surprise were the more than 100 postcards he received from the Netherlands. His 33 years ( I'm 30!!!!) old supporter Nadin Simbula is writing with Brett Hartmann. "Brett has become a good friend and I wanted to make his birthday more special for him." Along with the postcardcampaign, Nadin also put up a website with Brett's case on it. Brett was in 1997, when 23 years, arrested for the murder of Winda D. Snipes but Nadin is convinced that Brett is innocent. When Brett stays on death row he eventually will be executed by the state of Ohio. At this moment Brett is waiting for a result of the hearing of the 6th circuit court of appeals. He can get a reducement of 30 years tull life or life without parole. Then he can reopen his case. On his birthday Nadin spoke with Brett on the phone for the first time. "I am very grateful that people have taken the time to send me a postcard. Of course I think it's awfull that I'm allready in here for 10 years. I've lost a whole part of my life. But despite this I do have a birtdayfeeling. I have eaten pizza again since a long time and today the warden came with a huge pack of mail." In September (2007) Nadin will fly to the States to visit Brett for 12 days. For more info go to www.freebretthartmann.nl (and she put the new site on it!!) |
